Veteran Prosecutor Offers Proven Leadership On ‘Front Line Against Crime’

(AUSTIN) — Rosemary Lehmberg, the veteran prosecutor who has been a principle aide to retiring DA Ronnie Earle for three decades and his top assistant for the past 10 years, today announced that she will be a candidate for the top job in next year’s Democratic primary.

“I’ve been on the front line of the fight against crime — and the causes of crime,” Lehmberg said. “After thirty years as assistant district attorney, I know what it takes to protect our community, keep our children safe, and hold our public officials accountable.”

Saying that public safety is the foundation of Austin’s quality of life, Lehmberg cited her experience at the helm of every major division in the Travis County District Attorney’s office and her success as a tough trial attorney.

“I believe the standard this office has set for tough prosecution, smart innovative prevention, and vigorous enforcement of Texas laws against public corruption absolutely must be upheld,” Lehmberg said.

Lehmberg has earned praise during her career for her work against child abuse and public corruption. She was a driving force behind the Center for Child Protection (formerly the Children’s Advocacy Center) and headed up the office’s nationally recognized Public Integrity Unit. In addition, she has directed the office’s family justice, career criminal, trial, and other important divisions.

Unique among the announced or potential candidates for the job, Lehmberg has detailed experience running the day-to-day operations of the office, including overseeing a growing staff, developing an efficient budget, and safeguarding vital programs.

Lehmberg was a founding member of the Center For Child Protection and Child Protection Team, served on the advisory board of the Travis County Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA), and was a member of the Texas Multidisciplinary Task Force on Children’s Justice. She was awarded the first Shauna Jacobson Team Leadership Award and has been named the Austin Chronicle’s “Best Lawyer for Children’s Issues.”

A native of Taylor, Lehmberg moved to Austin to attend the University of Texas and earned her law degree from St. Mary’s University.
