ROSEMARY LEHMBERG
TOUGH ON CRIME, TOUGH ON THE CAUSES OF CRIME
“Rosemary Lehmberg has had a greater role in the success of the Travis County District Attorney’s Office than any other single person.”
— Ronnie Earle, January 7, 2008
Rosemary Lehmberg’s outstanding public service career embodies the best traditions of Travis County and our hopes for continuing to build a strong community known for its commitment to progressive policies that are both tough on crime and tough on the causes of crime.

As a veteran prosecutor, children’s advocate, and champion of accountability for public officials, Rosemary has headed up every major division in the Travis County District Attorney’s office, from chief of the Trial Division to director of the Public Integrity Unit. The only candidate who has detailed experience running the day-to-day operations of the office, including overseeing a growing staff and developing an efficient budget, she is uniquely qualified for the top job.
“I know I will be fortunate, if elected, to be able to build on such a strong foundation,” Lehmberg says. “Every leader puts her own stamp on the office she holds, and protecting children, safeguarding our community, and respecting taxpayers will be among my top priorities.”
Lehmberg earned praise for her work with the Center for Child Protection, one of the first such adovacy centers in Texas. Bringing together law enforcement, victim services professionals, caseworkers, and prosecutors, she and her team set a successful standard later mandated statewide by the Legislature. She worked with counselors at the Rape Crisis Center (now merged with SAFEPLACE), helped start the Sexual Assault Review Team, and has been involved with the Austin Child Guidance Center, all important efforts to help victims during their trials.
A founding member of the Center For Child Protection and Child Protection Team, she also served on the advisory board of the Travis County Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA), and was a member of the Texas Multidisciplinary Task Force on Children’s Justice. She was awarded the first Shauna Jacobson Team Leadership Award and has been named the Austin Chronicle’s “Best Lawyer for Children’s Issues.”
A native of Taylor, Lehmberg moved to Austin to attend the University of Texas and earned her law degree from St. Mary’s University. She practiced law privately before being recruited by then-Travis County DA Robert O. Smith. She has directed the Career Criminal Division, the Major Crimes Division, and the Family Justice Division, in addition to other work in the office.
“In these times of change, it’s important for Travis County to know it can count on seasoned leadership,” Lehmberg says. “Our community expects us to be tough on crime and tough on the cause of crime. That will be the hallmark of my office.”
